I wrote in my last entry that my year would have been immeasurably more satisfying if Jonathan Lethem had written to say he liked my film -

and what do you know I got an e-mail this morning and he said it was a nice surprise and a perfect film.

How often are you contacted by one of your favorite authors so they can say they like you? Not very often, I think. It is hard to believe it has happened, even though I sort of expected it. It is the nicest thing about art that you can see something that touches you very deeply and then if you say that or make something back it means more than anything, and I am so glad that there are fans in the world and that I am a fan and that you can love something and be in a community of people who love something or even if you are alone somebody loved it because they made it for you

i will probably be smiling all day.
